    my 78 yr old mother has become this way since my father’s death. She realizes it, but she refuses to let me help andshe cannot/won’t help herself. I am an only “child - 55 yrs old” and so is she. We really have no support system and she refuses counseling. I tried counseling and all i learned is there really is nothing i can do until she agrees to let me. I however feel her home is fast becoming a fire hazard. If she ever did agree to let me help though, i honestly don’t know where to begin its so overwhelming and the last time she let me dust around the mess, i reacted so bad from the dust, i had to use my allergy inhaler and was sick for 2 wks. Can you give me any suggestion what to do?

    Hi Vikki,
    Unfortunately, there are no clear cut answers on how to handle these situations. Have you considered joining the children of hoarders online support group to see what kind of suggestions the whole group can offer? There are over 700 members there that might be able to share what worked in their unique situations with you:
